If you haven’t heard of this powerful little seed, then it’s time you did. These little seeds are the newest discovery in super foods. Known for their healthy omega-3 fats and fiber, it is one of the easiest foods to add to your diet. The Chia seed is getting so much attention because with rising levels of mercury in fish, there have been warnings to cut back. And since the human body needs omega-3’s, and yet doesn’t produce them on its own, supplements are required- enter, the chia seed.

 

Chia seeds come from a flowering plant in the mint family that is native to Mexico and Guatemala. History suggests it was a very important food crop for the Aztecs, and has remained in regular use in its native countries- however, until lately, has remained largely unknown in North America. Researcher Wayne Coasts began studying chia as an alternative crop for farmers in northern Argentina around 29 years ago. He started his work on chia in 1991 and has since become an advocate of the tiny seeds health benefits. Some of the positive health benefits associated with the chia seed include, boosting energy, stabilizing blood sugar, aiding in digestion, and lowering cholesterol.

 

The seed comes in either a white, dark brown, or black color, also has a huge nutritional profile. It contains calcium, manganese, and phosphorus, as well as being a great source for healthy omega-3 fats. An added benefit to the chia seed is that it can be eaten whole or milled and still provides the same nutrition. This differs from the flax seed, which has to be ground before consumption to reap the benefits of it. An important thing to look for when purchasing chia seeds is a good quality product. Look for something organic and to avoid red seeds, which are immature chia seeds.

 

When adding them to your diet, the seeds are tasteless, so they are perfect to add into smoothies or juice. They can be added to salads for extra crunch. One of the interesting things about the chia seed, is if left in a liquid substance such as juice or yogurt, the seed with swell and develop an almost jelly like coating around it, allowing the seed to be suspended in the liquid. Many like adding it to liquid because it provides and energizing drink. Adding it to yogurt also gives yogurt more texture, as well as health benefits.
