Quick Summer Workout Tips

When it comes to summer, we all want to be looking our best. However, with the heat, it can be hard to stay motivated to workout… the AC just feels so good! We are here to help though!

Here are some tips to get your workouts in while the temperatures are soaring- as a side note, be sure and wear sunscreen every time you go out!

Don’t workout in the heat of the day!

This should be obvious, but in case it isn’t, working out in mid-day will zap all your energy, making the rest of your day difficult. It is best to work out in the early morning or late in the evening (if outdoors). If you notice you are getting too hot during a workout, here are signs of heat exhaustion: confusion, dizziness, fainting, fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps, nausea, and excessive sweating. If you experience any of these symptoms, find shade immediately and rest/rehydrate.

Stay Hydrated!

Drink water throughout the day- this will help you stay constantly hydrated and ready for your workout. You should also drink 16-20 ounces of water right after a workout. It will replace your fluids lost from sweating and help you recover faster.

Eat within 30 minutes of finishing your workout!

Eating a healthy snack after a workout will prohibit your body from burning muscle mass and help it burn fat. It will also help aid in your post workout recovery. Be careful though; do not reward yourself with bad food! Eating a healthy snack will benefit you much more.

Choose your workout clothing well!

You will help decrease your discomfort when working out in summer if you pick moisture wicking clothing. Cotton just absorbs all of your sweat and then it sits on you for the duration of your workout. Choosing clothing with polyester and/or Lycra content helps pull the sweat off of your body so you can cool down properly. Also, do not wear clothes that are overly tight. You will just end up feeling uncomfortable, and it can cause itching/irritation when your body produces sweat. Finally, choosing lighter colors in summer will help you stay cool. Dark colors absorb more heat, which can lead to excessive overheating.

We hope you enjoy getting out there and staying in shape with these summer workout tips! Have a happy and healthy workout!
