Alpha Lipoic Acid: What to know and how it can help!

At AMI, we can’t stress enough the positive effects vitamin and supplements have on your overall health! One extremely effective supplement is Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) which is a fatty acid found naturally within the cells in your body. It’s use, is to produce energy for your normal body functions by converting glucose into energy. Another benefit of ALA is that it is also an antioxidant. Antioxidants are important because they are substances, which neutralizes potentially harmful chemicals, known as free radicals. The uncontrolled production of free radicals is thought to be a major contributing factor to many degenerative diseases.

What makes ALA unique?

It is able to function in water and fat, unlike the more popular antioxidants we are used to consuming, vitamin C and E. ALA also is able to recycle antioxidants in the body, such as vitamin C and glutathione after they have been used. This is important because it helps your body to eliminate substances, which can become potentially harmful.

Why should you use ALA?

As an antioxidant, ALA can neutralize free radicals, which can damage cell. Free radical damage is also linked to aging and chronic illness.

ALA is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, making it not only protect the body from free radical damage, but also your most important organ, your brain.

If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy, which can be caused by injury, nutritional deficiencies, chemotherapy, or by conditions such as Lyme disease, alcoholism, shingles, thyroid disease, and kidney failure- ALA can be used to lessen symptoms, which include: Pain, burning, numbness, tingling, weakness, and itching.
